Best 10 fuel-efficient cars in Nigeria (Cars that uses lesser fuel)

While different people will have different things in mind, by “the top 10 fuel-efficient cars in Nigeria”, this article is meant for those interested in fuel-efficient cars, regardless of “what year the car was produced” or “the usage condition of the car”. In other words, if you’re someone who doesn’t have the money for a new car, this content may not be for you.

Now to the actual content

For anyone interested in a fuel-efficient car, I’ll generally ask you to consider a hybrid car. Although hybrids are usually a little more expensive than their ICE (internal combustion engine) equivalents, the additional costs required to own them, are usually worth it, when you consider the long term cost of owning the two car types. So, as a result, the cars I’ll be recommending you in this content, will all be hybrid cars.

Top 10 fuel-efficient cars in Nigeria

01. Ford Fusion 2020 Hybrid

Engine type: Hybrid; Cylinder set type: Inline 4; Transmission: Continuously variable-speed automatic; Drive type: FWD; Combined MPG: 42

The Ford Fusion 2020 Hybrid is hands-down one of the best fuel-efficient cars you can possibly get in Nigeria. I understand many Nigerian car users are not Ford users, but believe me when I say, the car is really something you can consider.

The only catch I can think of, in using a Ford car, is that Ford products are relatively expensive, compared to their equivalents from other brands like Toyota and Honda. But aside from the initial cost of ownership, the product is something you should consider, when getting a new fuel-efficient car.

As for the people who prefer cars with V6 engines, the Ford Fusion is not a car having a V6 engine variant; and this should not come as a surprise since I4 cars are what usually take the lead, when it comes to fuel-efficiency.

02. Honda Accord 2020 Hybrid

Engine type: Hybrid; Cylinder set type: Inline 4; Transmission: Continuously variable-speed automatic; Drive type: FWD; Combined MPG: 48

For anyone interested in a car with great fuel-efficiency, the Honda Accord 2020 Hybrid is another product you can consider. With a combined MPG of 48 miles per gallon, you’ll notice a big difference, compared to cars powered by just internal combustion engines.

I will like to add that the majority of the Honda Accord 2020 we have out there, are not the hybrid variants. So when trying to get this car, take further measures to ensure that the dealer doesn’t sell you an ICE version, in the disguise of a hybrid version.

Also, for those who wonder if you can get a V6 engine variant that has a similar combined MPG, the answer is “no”. So before deciding to commit to this car, also ensure you’re okay with an I4 car.

03. Honda Insight 2020 Hybrid

Engine type: Hybrid; Cylinder set type: Inline 4; Transmission: Continuously variable-speed automatic; Drive type: FWD; Combined MPG: 48 — 52

The Honda Insight is not a very popular car in Nigeria, compared to the likes of the Honda Accord, the Toyota Camry, and the Toyota Corolla. But believe me, when I say, the car is also a great one.

There are many variants of the Honda Insight. One of the variants has a combined MPG of 48 miles per gallon, while the other variants have as high 52 miles per gallon combined MPG. The variant which has a combined MPG of 48 has the same engine has the two other variants. But the reason why its own MPG is lower, has to do with the more impressive internal components used in it. For instance, this variant has a total of 10 speakers, compared to the other two variants which have only 8 speakers.

Furthermore, just like the first two cars mentioned above, the Honda Insight has no variant coming with a V6 engine. So before you decide to make this product your next car, be sure you’re also okay with an I4 car.

04. Hyundai Ioniq 2020 Hybrid

Engine type: Hybrid; Cylinder set type: Inline 4; Transmission: 6-speed automated manual; Drive type: FWD; Combined MPG: 55 — 58

Hyundai may not be as great as Toyota and Honda, in some aspects. However, when it comes to fuel-efficiency, this brand is not something you can ignore. In fact, with the Hyundai Ioniq 2020 cars coming with combined MPGs as high as 58 miles per gallon, the car can be said to be the most impressive of all cars in this content.

However, don’t simply jump at this Hyundai Ioniq because it has the highest combined MPG. Before deciding to commit to it, take note of the fact that the car comes with a 6-speed automated manual transmission. In other words, before deciding to commit to this car, ensure that you don’t mind giving up a continuously variable-speed automatic transmission for a 6-speed automated manual transmission.

Another thing I’ll like to add is that the Hyundai Ioniq is not as popular as most of the other cars mentioned in this content. In other words, if you don’t go to the popular car dealers in Nigeria, you may have a hard time finding it.

05. Hyundai Sonata 2020 Hybrid

Engine type: Hybrid; Cylinder set type: Inline 4; Transmission: 6-speed shiftable automatic; Drive type: FWD; Combined MPG: 47 — 52

The Hyundai Ioniq is not the only Hyundai product deserving being a part of this content, the Sonata 2020 Hybrid is another product that deserves being a part of this article. With a combined MPG of at least 47 miles per gallon and a combined MPG of at most 52 miles per gallon, the car is clearly one of the best.

All variants of the Ioniq look the same and have the same engine components. And the reason why some variants have 47 miles per gallon combined MPG and some have 52 miles per gallon combined MPG, has to do with their secondary internal components (e.g. AC, sound system, etc).

Also, before choosing a product like the Sonata 2020 Hybrid, be aware of the fact that the transmission of the car is not a continuously variable-speed automatic transmission. Rather, the transmission of the car is a 6-speed shiftable automatic.

06. Kia Niro 2020 Hybrid

Engine type: Hybrid; Cylinder set type: Inline 4; Transmission: 6-speed automated manual; Drive type: FWD; Combined MPG: 43 — 50

The car called Kia Niro is a product not very popular in Nigeria. In fact, a large share of this content’s readers will be hearing this name for the first time. But while this car may quite foreign, it is a product that deserves your consideration.

The Kia Niro 2020 Hybrid has a number of variants, and while some have a combined MPG of 43 miles per gallon, some have combined MPGs of 50 miles per gallon. Also, just like the Hyundai Ioniq, the transmission of the car is a 6-speed automated manual transmission.

However, due to the fact that the Kia Niro is not a very popular car, you may also have a hard time finding a place to buy it. But, if you head over to some of the popular car dealers in Nigeria, you shouldn’t have to stress yourself too much.

07. Toyota Avalon 2020 Hybrid

Engine type: Hybrid; Cylinder set type: Inline 4; Transmission: Continuously variable-speed automatic; Drive type: FWD; Combined MPG: 43 — 44

While the Toyota Avalon is a car many people will have seen, not many know it to be a highly fuel-efficient car. Truly, you can’t compare its fuel efficiency to those of the likes of Camry and Corolla, but still, this car is not a thing you should underestimate.

There are three variants of the car; two of these variants have a combined MPG of 43 miles per gallon, while the third variant has a combined MPG of 44 miles per gallon. Therefore, with the difference being just 1 MPG, it doesn’t really matter what variant of the car you end up buying.

Also, note that the ICE version of the Avalon 2020 is what’s popular. So, when trying to buy this car, ensure that the hybrid version is what you’re really buying. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a car having a combined MPG much less than what you have in mind.

08. Toyota Camry 2020 Hybrid

Engine type: Hybrid; Cylinder set type: Inline 4; Transmission: Continuously variable-speed automatic; Drive type: FWD; Combined MPG: 46 — 52

The Toyota Camry has always been one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the world. And that hasn’t changed up till date. The Camry 2020 Hybrid car has three variants, but regardless of what variant you buy, you should expect at least a combined MPG of 46 miles per gallon. And if the LE 4dr Sedan variant is what you consider, you can expect as high as 52 miles per gallon combined MPG.

Just like all other cars mentioned above, the Toyota Camry 2020 Hybrid comes with only I4 engine. So if you’re interested in a fuel-efficient car with V6 engine, you may further have to consider some other product.

09. Toyota Corolla 2020 Hybrid

Engine type: Hybrid; Cylinder set type: Inline 4; Transmission: Continuously variable-speed automatic; Drive type: FWD; Combined MPG: 52

The Toyota Corolla which has always been one of the most fuel-efficient cars, is also a car that turns out to deserve being a part of this content. The car has just one variant, and this variant in question has a combined MPG of 52 miles per gallon. With such a high combined MPG, you can expect to have less to worry about, when it comes to fuel efficiency.

However, just like some of the cars in this content, the ICE version of the Corolla 2020 is what’s popular out there. In other words, when trying to buy the Corolla 2020 Hybrid, chances are that the ICE version is instead what they’ll try to give you. So before making any payment, ensure that the Hybrid version is what you’ve really been given.

10. Toyota Prius 2020 Hybrid

Engine type: Hybrid; Cylinder set type: Inline 4; Transmission: Continuously variable-speed automatic; Drive type: FWD & AWD; Combined MPG: 50 — 56

An article like this will be very incomplete without the inclusion of a car like the Toyota Prius 2020 Hybrid. The car is of course not as popular as the Camry and the Corolla, but it’s a car you should really pay attention to, as some of its builds come with as high as 56 miles per gallon.

I will also like to add that, among all cars mentioned in this content, it’s the only one having AWD (all-wheel drive) variants. In other words, if AWD cars are what you use, then the Prius 2020 Hybrid is what you should consider, without wasting more time.

Closing

Note that there are some cars out there with better fuel-efficiency; but the reason why I didn’t include them in this content, is because I’m more concerned about those cars you can easily get in Nigeria. In simpler terms, this article isn’t just about fuel-efficient cars, it’s also about those of them you can easily get in Nigeria.
